Biografia

Amedeo Scarpiello graduated (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) in 2001. Since 2001 he works for CNIT (National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications) at National Laboratory for Multimedia Communications in Naples. He has 15 years of research experience over various areas of telecommunications, ranging from physical and MAC layer to networking and data transport issues. Since 2013 he is member of CNIT team which is responsible of the administration of the CNIT ICT infrastructure and services, as well as the planning and development of new ICT solutions to support the consortium activities. In addition, since 2003 he is responsible for logistic-organisational coordination of CNIT laboratory in Naples. He has a high- level competence about laboratory equipment for measurements on telecommunication systems and networks, and in realizing testbeds for in-situ and remote performance evaluation of new technologies, protocols and prototypes. Thanks to his broad background of technical-scientific skills, including the problem-solving ability, he is able to find fast and effective solutions to various research and technical problems. Finally, he serves as referee for some national and international journals and conferences. 

Attività di Ricerca

 

His main research interests about the wireless networks pertain the Mesh and Ad Hoc networks and the Wireless Sensor networks for disaster recovery and eHealth scenarios but also for intelligent transportation systems, smart grid environment and critical infrastructures monitoring. With regard to the heterogeneous networks, his main research interests are in the field of Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Software-defined Networks (SDN).

From January 2016 he is CNIT referent in the research project named eHealthNet, aiming to study, analyse and design a heterogeneous network for medical purposes.

From June 2016 he is CNIT principal investigator for research activities, in collaboration with University of Naples Parthenope, concerning Wireless Body Sensor Networks for health-monitoring applications. 

 

From 2014 to present he is CNIT principal investigator in the research project named ITINERE (InTegrated and INteroperable systEm for Railway Enhanced applications), aiming to study, analyse and design a BPLC (Broadband Power Line Communications) modem that leverages the railway overhead line (catenary) or the third-rail power line to transmit signalling data and infotainment on train.

 

From 2012 to 2015 he was CNIT principal investigator in the research project named Se@ME (Sustainable e-maritime @ssistance for Maritime Employees, Passengers and Yachtsmen), aiming to study and analyse interfaces and environments for remote collaborative support, as well as e-learning platforms for the tele-training of crew that carry out health care tasks and technical maintenance of on-board equipment.

 

From 2012 to 2015 he was CNIT principal investigator in the research project named “Nuovi paradigmi e Tecnologie per la Collective Knowledge nell'E-Society”, aiming to study and analyse new technologies and methods, based on the NGN and SDN paradigms, for sharing collective knowledge in the E-Society.

 

From 2011 to 2015 he was CNIT principal investigator in the Work Package 5 and 11 of the HABITAT (HArBour traffIc opTimizAtion sysTem) project, aiming to study, design and implement a telecommunications network with high quality of service, based on the combination of Wireless Sensor Networks and Ad-Hoc/Mesh Networks, as well as Cognitive Radio Networks (in collaboration with the CNIT Research Unit at University of Naples Federico II), for the interconnection of sensor systems (radar, EO/IR IP-Camera, wavemeters, etc) and the transmission of data and control and synchronism signals, to and from the control room of a harbour.

From 2012 to 2015 he was CNIT Technical Committee member and Technical Leader in a research project named MC3-Care (Mobile Continuous Connected Comprehensive - Care). In this project he studied and designed an architecture of heterogeneous wireless network in order to transmit data acquired from various biomedical sensors to a medical service center by means of patient smartphone; the patient can receive the diagnosis from the medical service center at the same smartphone and, eventually, can book a medical examination. At this end, technological paradigms to provide adequate Quality of Service, also in presence of low bandwidth, have been studied.

From 2007 to 2011 he was engaged in a research project named STEEL (Sistemi, Tecnologie abilitanti E mEtodi per La formazione a distanza); in this project, a complex QoS architecture based on MPLS/IP-QoS integration has been designed and implemented over the project heterogeneous network (an integrated satellite-terrestrial network for distance learning).

From 2008 to 2010 he was CNIT Technical Leader in a research project, named FALCO (Flight Air Link for COoperation), aiming to design and implement a system for real-time data transmission from an aircraft to a ground mobile station, a kind of headquarters near the areas affected by a disaster able to provide timely and valuable information for an efficient rescue intervention.

From 2005 to 2008 he was engaged in the research project named IKNOS to design, develop and simulate efficient tools and techniques to provide adequate Quality of Service in Next Generation Networks.

From 2004 to 2007 he was engaged in a research project named AIBER to study and design an architecture of heterogeneous wireless network for multi-channel integrated access to the cultural heritage of the Campania region (Italy).

 

From 2003 to 2005 he was engaged in a research project named VICOM (Virtual Immersive Communications) to realize an immersive e-learning system based on virtual reality technologies, scene analysis systems and remote control of real instrumentation.

 

From 2003 to 2005 he was engaged in a research project named Technological Network for Instrumentation and Measurements in Telecommunications to integrate and interconnect a group of testbeds, located in Naples and Catania, in order to share the resources provided by the instrumentation set constituting the core of the overall distributed system .

From 2003 to 2004 he was engaged in a project named Teledoc2, deployed and managed a multicast network (at that time, the only multicast enabled network in Italy!) in order to provide PhD students of a group of Italian Universities with a innovative distance learning service

In 2003 he was CNIT referent in a training project named “The training course for technicians specialized in Information and Communication Technologies”, whose mission was providing the participants with the bases of computer science and telecommunication together with advanced practice in developing and managing multimedia network applications.

From 2001 to 2003 he was engaged in a research project named LABNET (LABoratory on NETwork) to acquire sophisticated laboratory equipment for remote measurements on telecommunication systems and networks, and develop middleware for its remote controlling.
